B and his wonderful family have a front yard of approximately 400 square feet. In the spring of 2017 they approached me about growing food in the sunny spacious area. This was the concept plan.
After cleanup, some basic hardscaping and amending the soil, the space was ready to be planted. We used a combination of Organic Veggie Starts and Seeds.
I returned regularly throughout the growing season to check on the space. I helped with weeding, harvesting, Succession Planting and Integrated Pest Management. I provided direction on watering and fertilizing practices and taught about proper pruning, harvesting and maintaining the plants.
The happy garden grew and grew
After an abundant summer of harvesting daily the season started to wind down. Time for garden cleanup and fall and winter planting. Things like garlic went in now.
Then the greens were protected from frost, any remaining annual plants were donated to the compost and the garden was ready to sleep the winter through.
Baby Beets after thinning
Great example of Succession Planting! I few rows planted every couple weeks for a continual harvest. Beet greens are delicious too!
